Exploring Coding at St. Bernard Catholic School’s Coding Symposium

Posted On Tuesday May 15, 2018

On Friday, May 11, 2018 students and staff from Grades 4 to 8 at St. Jude, St. Joseph Oshawa, St. John Bosco and St. John Paul II Catholic Schools gathered at St. Bernard Catholic School for a Coding Symposium. Student representatives from each of the five schools spoke about what coding is … fun, challenging, creative, exciting, board-wide, problem solving and more.

Guest speaker Catherine Gotovsky, a Grade 12 student from Thornhill, ON inspired students to:

  1. Try Everything – see what you like and what you don’t like;
  2. Develop a Growth Mindset – don’t view your abilities as fixed;
  3. Start Now – the best time to start was yesterday, the second best time is today; and
  4. Practice – Developing skills is all about practice and anyone can do it.

Students participated in coding challenges throughout the day long event and used their problem solving skills, persistence and teamwork to achieve success.
